PhD Studentship

Molecular mechanism of Alcohol Use Disorder

A PhD studentship, funded by BiosearLab, is available at the University of East London. Candidates who are asylum seekers or refugees are strongly encouraged to apply. The focus of the research is to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for changes in behaviour induced by alcohol consumption. Previous work in our laboratory has utilized the fruit fly model (Drosophila melanogaster) to investigate the role of G proteins, opiate receptors and GABA receptors in alcohol-induced molecular and behavioural changes. This project aims to build on previous findings to further elucidate the role of the GABAergic system and investigate its interactions with other neurotransmitter systems. Candidates wishing to apply should have a strong interest in neuroscience, have some previous laboratory experience, be personally motivated to work in a small team and wishing to contribute ideas to the project. The studentship is available from March 2024 and includes a standard UK stipend, and registration fees. To apply please submit a CV and a support letter including the name of two referees (preferably at least one should be an academic referee). Please send these documents by 26 January 2024 to Dr. Stefano Casalotti s.casalotti@uel.ac.uk, who can also be contacted for further information.
